Sometimes things happen that change your life forever (such as it ending). And these things stick with you even after death. As for Abraham Lincoln, he still cannot get past it.

Lincoln is the only one facing forward. We see forward as left to right in the U.S.
Actually Lincoln is the only one facing forward. Western cultures read from left to right and portraits follow this rule too. Tape players play button or the time bar in media players do the same.
If it would just say that all the others watch to their left but Lincoln keeps watching HIS back, it would be right and still funny.
They’re all facing forward except Abe? They’re facing left…
That’s actually why he’s facing backyards. It’s standard for presidents who died in office. Look up the symbolism of statues, especially ones with horses. There’s a lot of symbolism that people have lost touch with in the modern era.
perhaps Lincoln is facing forward and the others have their backs turned……..
The “died in office” rule does not apply. FDR died in office and he’s facing the other direction on the dime.
Stop ruining the joke. I think that we can agree that everyone except Lincoln is facing one way, and therefore that is the collective ‘forward’.
It’s a joke
actually they are all facing forward, we are just looking at them from the side. THINK ABOUT IT
“he still cannot get passed it”
he still cannot get past it
…just sayin’
Well, seeing as how easy it was to ruin this joke, it seems thats just a proof of how crap the joke was to start with.
And yeah, I agree with the “Lincoln is facing forward” thing.
FDR died while in office but Lincoln was killed in office there is a difference there.
Great catch SAMurphy. I never proof read these things and I totally missed that.
The first three turned their backs on the banks and Lincoln was shot in the back by them.
But no one cares so let’s joke about money created out of nothing.
FDR did die in office, but too bad its eisenhower on the dime not FDR
Even though everyone but Lincoln is TECHNICALLY facing forward, I agree with the “collective” forward comment….since everyone is facing left, and Abe is facing right, he is the only one opposite….I see him collective as the one looking back……I liked the joke…it made me smile….
Well maybe he should have been looking backwards then, and that’s why he got shot. Just sayin’.
Actually, since most artists (portraitists) are right-handed,they typically begin at the left side of the paper or canvas for the profile and proceed to the right to avoid smearing the medium they happen to be using for the portrait.
Instead, what if we place the coins in three dimensional space, with the four presidents standing in a line facing the same direction. The difference in profiles would place us (the viewer) in between Jefferson and Lincoln. The symbolism here would be that these four presidents would all be looking forward, into the future, as we all look backward. Because their faces are on coins, and the united states uses a fiat currency, we can assume that these great forward looking men are telling us that we place an imaginary sense of grandeur on our past. Maybe I’m reading too much into it.
That whole facing this way or that. Not sure but, NOT TRUE. FDR on the dime died in office. JFK, Kennedy half dollar died in office. So…
Unless they’re watching his back for him.
Actually, it IS FDR on the dime. And the “died” in office vs. “killed” in office idea doesn’t work either. If you look at a US half-dollar, featuring John F. Kennedy, who was killed in office, he also faces to the left, when if what Verisia said was true, he’d face towards the right, like Lincoln.
why is Lincoln the only one on a dark coin? could we analyze this further?
Uh oh… on the new nickels Jefferson is either facing to the right or facing forward. Guess that means he’s spinning in his grave.
They’re all facing forward.
Doesn’t it all depend on the shoulders?
Hey! I just found out that if I rotate the penny I can get Lincoln facing the same way as the others. Go figure.
I’m only a mere Australian and don’t know much of US currency or history but I must say: It was a joke, it made me smile, it accomplished it’s set goal. Bunch of pedantic knobs squabbling over technicalities, sucking the joy from life. Smile. It wont kill you
This brings to mind a saying I’ve heard “It takes 46 muscles to frown but only 4 to slap a fool.” (On the plus side you can all tell me how wrong I am about amounts of muscles used to do what, here’s the beauty: I dont care!)
I was told that all the others turned their backs on him for freeing the slaves… Thats how I heard it.
I heard the others turned their backs on him for freeing the slaves… Thats what I heard.
Hey guys, all of you arguing that, “he’s actually facing forward and that’s just a western culture thing”? Guess what? These are American coins. It’s Western culture. He’s facing backwards. Get over it.
hehe im from the netherlands, here forward is facing the front, no one is looking backward or forward, imo they all look to a side
just had to put my 2 cents in
The likeness of President Lincoln on the penny is an adaption of a plaque executed by Victor David Brenner, an outstanding portraitist and sculptor. President Theodore Roosevelt was so impressed with Mr. Brenner’s design of a Lincoln plaque that he recommended to the Secretary of the Treasury that the design be placed on a coin to be issued in the Lincoln Centennial Year, 1909.
The direction that Lincoln faces on the cent was not mandated—this was simply the choice of the designer.

They are all facing towards Mecca, except for Washington, Roosevelt, and Jefferson
